Does the start of a new season’s fashions send you into a spin as you gaze into your wardrobe without the latest skirt length or shoulder pad in sight and realise that you wouldn’t have a clue how to wear it if it was staring you in the face? The new season drops are landing on the high street right now. Whilst the autumn/winter season spells the end of the summer, a new season brings with it fantastic new styles and fashions to covet and enjoy! Don’t be afraid to give a new trend a try, even it’s just a nod to it here and there.
So what’s new for autumn 2009?
After the summer’s no trend-trends, this season is edgy, bold and as dramatic as you want to make it! It is said that the fashions this season are bolder and harsher than they have been with edge and structure, mimicking the grit and strength shown in a downturn in the economy. So the bigger the shoulder, the longer the boot and the more structure the better! From serious sculptural cuts to flirty Parisian glamour via hardcore punk glam and leather and 1940s elegance, there’s a trend to suit everyone!
1980s – this is the decade that style seemed to forget, but the remix for a/w ’09 is colourful and fun, go for bright and bold colours and as OTT as you can handle!
1940s Lady – think elegance and style when it comes to nailing this trend and feminine dressing at its finest! Go for belted coats and nipped-in waist skirt suits to really emphasise your figure
Parisian Chic – chic, cheeky and coquettish, this trend is all about classic French glamour on the sophisticated side of fashion
Punk Glam – this is sexy and a great evening look, think black leather, lace and body-con and you’re there!
Architectural – this look is structured and shoulders galore! Think geometric shapes and strong forms if statement is your thing
Easy Luxe – the perfect balance between practical and desirable, this look is investment dressing at its best
How to wear it – Emma’s top tips
Don’t wear each trend slavishly – pick a key piece you love, rather than sporting it head to toe
1980s – keep a whole 80s thing for evening, so colleagues don’t think you’re trying to compete with ‘Working Girl’
1940s – use this look for your work day look, a chic and classic style which shows you mean business Keep the 1940s grown-up look fun with a bright bag or bow and bold accessories
Let the dramatic and structured shapes speak for themselves, this look does not need over-accessorising. Go for simple shoes such as classic court or stiletto heel
Big shoulders definitely need to be kept simple with plain tees and colour blocks
The right shoe, a key bag or a fantastic hair band is the easiest way to nod to the new trends
Pair bright splashed prints with black opaque tights to ground the look
